Sri Lanka’s 1,340-kilometre coastline is one of the most diverse and beautiful in Asia — a kaleidoscope of different beach types, colours, and characters that changes almost with every kilometre. The well-known beaches deserve their reputations. But some of the island’s most extraordinary stretches of sand remain refreshingly unknown.
Tangalle: The South Coast's Secret
Tangalle is perhaps the best-kept secret on Sri Lanka’s south coast — a small fishing town with a dramatic rocky headland sheltering extraordinary beaches. Medaketiya Beach stretches in a long, undeveloped arc of golden sand backed by palmyra palms, while smaller coves offer calm snorkelling water with healthy coral formations.

Pasikuda: The East Coast's Perfect Lagoon
On Sri Lanka’s east coast, Pasikuda is extraordinary — a large, perfectly sheltered lagoon with knee-deep turquoise water stretching for nearly a kilometre from the shore. One of the calmest and most swimmable beaches in Sri Lanka, largely untouched by the mass tourism that has altered the south coast.
Nilaveli: The Undiscovered North
North of Trincomalee, Nilaveli offers some of the most pristine beaches in Sri Lanka — long, white-sand bays of extraordinary beauty. The offshore reef at Pigeon Island Marine National Park shelters blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and remarkable tropical fish in crystal-clear visibility.
